UK announces measures to combat forced marriage

The British government has announced that the age at which foreigners can apply for a marriage visa will soon be increased from 18 to 21.  The change is intended to prevent teenagers from being brought into the UK and forced to marry against their will.

Ministers say raising the age from 18 is needed to stop forced marriages and deter people from abusing the system.

The measure applies to both partners. Spouses will have to agree to learn English – with future plans for English tests before spouses get their visas.

[Immigration] Minister Phil Woolas said “it is important we protect vulnerable young people” and “avoid exploitation”.

Other changes intended to tackle forced marriage means people will have to register their intention to get married before they leave the UK.

Another measure to fight forced marriage will be implemented before the end of November.

The new rules will come into effect on November 27, just days after the Forced Marriage (Civil Protection) Act which will allow anyone to demand a injunction against a wedding ceremony going ahead, if they believe it is going ahead under duress, or an intended bride or groom being taken overseas.

Last month, the British government disclosed that the Forced Marriage Unit had rescued about 60 children aged 15 or less during the past four years.
