"A time is coming when men will go mad, and when they see someone who is not mad, they will attack him saying, 'You are mad, you are not like us'." --- St Antony of Egypt

Batman, the city, sues Batman, the movie

by Scott Gilbreath ~ November 13th, 2008

A town in Turkey named Batman has finally noticed that several films have been made about some character with the same name as their fair city. The mayor is suing for using the city’s name without permission.

Detective Comics #27Holy lawsuit, Batman!

“There is only one Batman in the world,” [Batman mayor Huseyin] Kalkan said. “The American producers used the name of our city without informing us.”

No one from the town of Batman has explained why it took so many years to take legal action. Batman first appeared as a comicbook character in 1939 and the “Batman” TV series started in 1966. Tim Burton’s first bigscreen rendition for Warner Bros. came out in 1989. Undoubtedly the fact that “Dark Knight” is about to pass the $1 billion mark at the B.O. played a part in stirring the ire of the Turkish hamlet.

The mayor is prepping a series of charges against [The Dark Knight director Christopher] Nolan and Warner Bros., which owns the right to the Batman character, including placing the blame for a number of unsolved murders and a high female suicide rate on the psychological impact that the film’s success has had on the city’s inhabitants.

The comic book cover shown here is Batman’s first appearance in print: Detective Comics #27, May 1939.

If they win will Bruce Wayne have to speak with a heavy accent and drink coffee from tiny cups?

Commissioner Gordon, get me the bat phone… Only Adam West (the real batman) can sip coffee from a tiny cup & drive the bat mobile (without spilling) to Gotham’s HRC for arbitration ;-)
