Human Rights Act has devalued human rights

So says British Conservative MP Nick Herbert.

Shadow Justice Secretary Nick Herbert said the controversial act, brought in by Labour, has had the opposite effect of its intentions by devaluing human rights and led to “distorted prioirities” [sic].

He said the result has been to devalue the very language of rights by associating serious violations and abuses with “trivial complaints in our own country”.
[…]
He added: “The very concept of human rights as understood in public discourse is now in danger. The Government admits that the Human Rights Act has never carried the public with it.”

Some of what he said would apply equally in Canada.

The full text of Mr Herbert’s speech, entitled “Rights without responsibilities — a decade of the Human Rights Act”, is posted here.
