Yukon declares open season on bison

Yukon has too many bison roaming around and something has to be done.  C’mon up north, everybody, the huntin’s fine.

“In previous years the only people that were permitted to hunt were those people that applied for and obtained a permit, and the number of permits was restricted,” said conservation officer Kris Gustafson.

“This year, it’s an open season.”

Yukon’s bison population is estimated at 1100, more than twice the number officials think optimal.

In not unrelated news, Field and Stream has named Alaska Governor Sarah Palin a hero of the year.

F&S distinguished Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin as a hero—she not only endorsed the traditions of sportsmen while campaigning as a vice presidential candidate, she is an active hunter and fisherman herself.

F&S has posted several photos of Gov Palin fishing and hunting.

Maybe she’d be interested in hunting for bison close to home in Alaska’s neighbouring territory.
