New Brunswick mayor urges province to do a Danny Williams

Danny Williams’ grandstanding is contagious, apparently. Clem Tremblay, Mayor of Dalhousie, New Brunswick, wants his provincial government to seize a paper mill belonging to AbitibiBowater.

The New Brunswick government should follow the lead of Newfoundland and Labrador Premier Danny Williams by expropriating the property of AbitibiBowater’s Dalhousie paper mill, according to the town’s mayor.

Dalhousie’s economy was devastated when the paper company shut down the local mill, throwing 330 people out of work in January. The paper mill’s closure is causing uncertainty in the north shore town of 3,600 that has depended on the paper mill for employment for 80 years.

Dalhousie Mayor Clem Tremblay said he’d like to see New Brunswick seize the company’s assets left in the community.

“As far as Newfoundland’s premier is concerned, I applaud everything that he did,” Tremblay said.

Get this: Tremblay doesn’t believe the mill will ever operate again regardless.

“People are kind of realizing that the paper mill industry in Dalhousie is fait accompli — it’s finished,” he said.

What’s the point of seizing idle machinery if the mill is closed for good? Expropriation would be a completely futile gesture. Clearly, Mr Tremblay is only interested in giving AbitibiBowater the finger.  That, too, sounds like Danny Williams.

Actually sounds like a good deal. AB gets a wad of taxpayer cash, unloads longer viable operations, the workers will have to take a realistic wage and AB is off the hook for separation and other niceties. Then watch NB & NL do a dance to attract big business to their neck of the woods. Maybe the Christmas bonus will be a lot full of Bricklands

Steve – I like the way you think. There are shut down mills all over the country that the owners have no chance of selling except at scrap value. Maybe AB has found the proverbial rube that bought the Brooklyn Bridge.
