“Human rights carolers” call for boycott of jewellery store

When you come across a bunch of people calling themselves “human rights carolers”, you can bet they’re not spreading Christmas cheer.

Thirty human rights carolers braved the cold and ice today to serenade Manhattan’s holiday shoppers with a call, for the second year, to boycott the jewelry store and companies of Israeli settlement-builder and diamond mogul Lev Leviev.

As you might also have guessed, they sang traditional yuletide tunes with nasty new words. This is from the first song on the carolers’ six-page lyric sheet of “parody holiday carols”.

Leviev, Leviev
(to the tune of Jingle Bells – emphasis on the Lev i.e. Lev-i-ev, Lev-i-ev)

Leviev, Leviev, destroys human lives,
Think of where your money goes when shopping for your wives, -HEY!
Leviev, Leviev, displaces human lives,
Think of where your money goes when shopping for your wives.

Building settlements
on confiscated lands,
selling di-amonds,
with blood on his hands. Ho Ho Ho!

Making lots of dough,
Ignoring human rights
What a shame it is to shop at Leviev tonight! -HEY!

A short while ago, we heard about the massacre of the carols perpetrated by churches in Britain and the United States. This seems to be the year for dismal Christmas festivities.

For the record, I take no position the righteousness of Leviev diamonds or the boycott campaign. For one thing, Leviev has no stores in Canada. For another, I find it hard to get worked up about boycotts of products that only the wealthy can afford to buy in the first place.
