Wisdom From the Desert

"A time is coming when men will go mad, and when they see someone who is not mad, they will attack him saying, 'You are mad, you are not like us'." --- St Antony of Egypt

Turkey: Family jailed for life in honour killing

by Scott Gilbreath ~ January 13th, 2009

Diyarbakir, TurkeyA Turkish court has ordered five members of the same family imprisoned for life in the murder of a 16-year-old girl who became pregnant after being raped.

The original news report is posted in French at CyberPresse.ca. What follows is my (literal but somewhat stilted) translation of most of the story:

A Turkish court has sentenced five members of the same family to life imprisonment for the murder of a young girl who became pregnant after a rape, a feminist association stated on Monday.

In its verdict handed down on Friday, the court of Van (east) sentenced to life imprisonment the brother of Naile Erdas—the victim of an “honour crime” in 2006 when she was only 16—whom the judges designated as the perpetrator of the murder, said the Van Women’s Association.

It pronounced the same penalty against the young girl’s father, mother, and two uncles, who it considered instigators of the crime, and punished with 16 years and eight months a third uncle guilty of remaining silent, unusually heavy sentences for this type of killing.
[…]
Naile Erdas became pregnant after a rape but hid her condition until being hospitalised for a severe migraine, when her doctors noted her pregnancy.

When the family threatened and offered bribes to recover the young girl, doctors decided to keep her at the hospital and informed the public prosecutor.

One week after delivery, that one [presumably the public prosecutor] authorised Naile’s return to the family home on her father’s promise that nothing would happen to her.

However, she was killed by her brother hours after arriving at the house.

The government and public agencies have in recent years made efforts to eradicate the practice of honour crimes, but they still enjoy widespread tolerance in south-eastern Anatolia among the Kurdish majority population, where they are most often committed.

The story is datelined Diyarbakir, Turkey.
