Leeds imam deceives disabled wife

by Scott Gilbreath ~ January 14th, 2009

A Muslim teacher on trial in Leeds, England, is said to have divorced his crippled wife without her knowledge so he could maintain his entitlement to her disability compensation. Khalil Kazi then married a second wife in Morocco, but neglected to inform his first wife Meimuna Kazi. His deceit was discovered only after Meimuna applied for a divorce and was informed that a divorce had already been granted four years previously.

Mr Kazi is charged with falsifying documents, perverting the course of justice, and perjury.

Giving evidence wearing a veil, wheelchair user Mrs Kazi told the court how she reacted when she was told there was already a divorce in place.

She said: “My solicitor went to speak to Mr Kazi’s solicitor and she came back with the shocking news that I was already divorced… I was very shocked. I trusted my husband and I never expected he would do this to me.”

She added: “I felt very guilty he had lived with me for one year living in adultery

“He never told me at any time he had divorced me. He never mentioned anything about a divorce.”

Mrs Kazi became a paraplegic because of an epidural abscess suffered while giving birth to their son. A £1 million fund was established for her following a negligence suit against the hospital.

Mr Kazi denies the charges.
