"A time is coming when men will go mad, and when they see someone who is not mad, they will attack him saying, 'You are mad, you are not like us'." --- St Antony of Egypt

Blackmore to cite same-sex “marriage” in defence of polygamy

by Scott Gilbreath ~ January 21st, 2009

Winston Blackmore’s lawyer Blair Suffredine has announced that he will cite Canada’s legalisation of same-sex “marriage” in defending his client against polygamy charges.

“It’s pretty hard to justify why gay marriage is OK and polygamy’s not,” Suffredine said. “The truth is he claims this is part of his religion.”

For good measure, Mr Suffredine also brought Islam into the controversy.

“I don’t know what religion our attorney-general [Wally Oppal] is, but I think in the Qur’an they permit multiple marriages, too.”

Mr Blackmore maintains that polygamy is a protected religious right under Canada’s Charter of Rights and Freedoms. He is charged with having 20 wives and faces five years’ imprisonment if convicted.

It was only a few years ago that enlightened social liberals in Canada scoffed at the notion that legalising same-sex “marriage” would open the door for polygamy. Now, apparently, they have no response to Winston Blackmore.

As Margret Kopala pointed out, the Western liberal state has no reason to allow polygamy. Far from being “enlightened”, polygamy is a throwback to ancient times and primitive cultures that consider women and children property.

[...] WE TOLD YOU SO! Blackmore to cite same-sex “marriage” in defence of polygamy …. [...]

Yeah, well, “I told you so” years ago.

We’re not going to have the collective sense to do it, as Christians, but we should hold our own debates now, and try to influence the shape of the law that will include polygyny, because if we do not, then the abomination that comes out of the court system will damage us all.

But we’re going to be all or nothing heterosexual monogamy or nothing pouters and we’re going to get a very bitter pill for our petulance.

What do you have in my mind as a biblically acceptable alternative to heterosexual monogamy?
