Wisdom From the Desert

"A time is coming when men will go mad, and when they see someone who is not mad, they will attack him saying, 'You are mad, you are not like us'." --- St Antony of Egypt

Sharia court sentences Uganda Mufti to hell

by Scott Gilbreath ~ January 23rd, 2009

Over 500 Muslim sheiks from Uganda, Kenya, Tanzania, and Egypt met in Kampala and convened a Sharia court to try the Mufti of Uganda, Sheik Shaban Ramadhan Mubajje, who was alleged to have mishandled property entrusted to him.

Sheik Mubajje was weighed and found wanting: The assembled clerics sentenced him to hell.  For good measure, while he remains here awaiting arrival at his eternal destiny, they barred him from every mosque on the face of the earth.

The court prohibited Mubajje from going to any mosque anywhere in the world. It also condemned him to hell for reportedly committing ‘Haram’ (sins) against the Muslim community.
[…]
The court said it based its ruling on the Koran and the Hadith (Sayings of Prophet Muhamad) relating to management of endowments (Awkafu) for the Muslims. Mubajje was not invited to defend himself before the court that was convened by the Islamic Cultural Association, which is mainly composed of Muslim clerics opposed to Mubajje.

No formal charges were levelled against Mubajje. Instead, when the court started its sitting at Hotel Africana in Kampala, Hajji Muhammad Kisambira, a former executive member of the Uganda Muslim Supreme Council, briefed the clerics on the mismanagement and sale of the Muslim property.

Let’s see: There were no formal charges and the accused was not “invited” to offer a defence.  (In fact, it’s not clear from the news story that he was even present.) What’s Arabic for “kangaroo court”?

By the by, the Hotel Africana looks rather posh.  It seems an incongruous place for a Sharia court to deliver a verdict of eternal damnation.
