Head teacher sues after harassment by Muslims

Erica Connor, former head teacher at a school in Surrey, England, has sued Surrey County Council for failing to support her when she was harassed and vilified by Muslim governors. She accuses the council of cowardice and claims her experience at the school was so stressful that she was forced to take permanent sick leave for depression and may never be able to teach again.
The 57-year-old says her problems started when new governors joined the governing body of her school in 2004 and, among other things, accused her of Islamophobia and racism.
In a landmark case at the High Court, she is seeking hundreds of thousands of pounds in compensation from Surrey County Council, for not providing her with enough support.

Ms Connor claimed some of the governors, including convert Paul Martin and Mumtaz Saleem, effectively “railroaded” meetings and subjected her to a barrage of criticism.After being accused of Islamophobia, an investigation of the school was conducted, acquitting it of any race-related accusations.
But the complaints continued and a second report published which criticised Ms Connor’s perceptions of multiculturalism and concluded that the school “had not been responsive to the needs of the faith community”.
The council maintains that Ms Connor “had to expect debate and criticism” in her position and that it is not responsible for the activities of the governing body. The hearing continues.
Connor left the school in September 2005 and is now living with her mother in Abergavenny, Wales.
