Have you seen this screaming eagle?
Screech, mascot of the Cape Breton Screaming Eagles hockey team, has been kidnapped.
Club officials reported Screech missing after a worker found a supply room door unlocked Tuesday. It showed signs of forced entry. Despite a frantic search, no one could find the $5,000 costume used to pump up the crowd during games. It was last seen March 11.
The Screaming Eagles are scheduled to play the Saint John Sea Dogs tonight in the first round of the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League playoffs. The game is set for the Eagles’ home town of Sydney, so an “older, smellier” version of the team’s mascot will be pressed into service.
Eagles head coach Mario Durocher scoffs at the suggestion that the team’s play will be affected by the missing mascot. We shall see.
UPDATE (21 Mar.): The Screaming Eagles won 5-4 in overtime.
