Quebec Innu hunt endangered caribou
by Scott Gilbreath ~ March 30th, 2009
Innu from Quebec crossed into southern Labrador over the weekend to hunt endangered caribou. The hunting party has reportedly killed 18 of the 108 animals in the area. Officials from Newfoundland and Labrador Department of Natural Resources say all they can do is gather surveillance evidence to lay charges after the killing’s finished.
The party is utilising non-traditional aboriginal hunting methods.
Natural Resources Minister Kathy Dunderdale says the hunting party, accompanied by women, children and elders, is using GPS technology, snowmobiles and high-powered rifles to chase down and kill the animals.

Officials say it is not safe for conservation officers to engage the group at this time.
This is far from the first time Quebec Innu have gone after endangered caribou in southern Labrador.

Well the tax payers are paying for the Innu to kill off this herd. So I guess it’s time to cut off the money spent by the Feds to fund this band. There’s no way most of us tax payers can afford to take the family hunting for a month or so, with all the modern tech. equipment. Even if they were hunting in the old way it might not be so bad and take maybe 6 animals, but what their doing now is not the way I want to see my tax $ spent. Cut the funding off to this band of Innu now. Let your M.L.A. know how you feel. FJA123
