Maundy Thursday hymn: “Go to dark Gethsemane”
by Scott Gilbreath ~ April 9th, 2009
“Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me.” — St Matthew 11:29
The closing hymn at this evening’s Maundy Thursday service at Christ Church, Windsor. During the singing of the hymn, the altar was stripped of all furnishings.
Hymn #132 in The Book of Common Praise (1938), official hymn book for the whole of The Church of England in Canada (later Anglican Church of Canada).
Go to dark Gethsemane,
Ye that feel the tempter’s power;
Your Redeemer’s conflict see,
Watch with him one bitter hour;
Turn not from his griefs away,
Learn of Jesus Christ to pray.Follow to the judgment hall;
View the Lord of life arraigned;
O the wormwood and gall!
O the pangs his souls sustained!
Shun not suffering, shame, or loss;
Learn of him to bear the cross.Calvary’s mournful mountain climb;
There, adoring at his feet,
Mark the miracle of time,
God’s own sacrifice complete;
“It is finished!” hear him cry;
Learn of Jesus Christ to die.
Words: James Montgomery, 1820.
Music: Petra, Richard Redhead, 1853.
