Iran has executed Delara Darabi
by Scott Gilbreath ~ May 1st, 2009
Twitter channel @DelaraDarabi is reporting that Delara Darabi was hanged early this morning at Iran’s Rasht prison. Delara was condemned to death for an alleged crime committed when she was 17 and spent over five years on death row.
Despite the fact that Iran has signed two international agreements forbidding capital punishment for crimes committed by juveniles, the Islamic republic continues to execute children.
Moreover, Delara insisted she was innocent and that the murder was committed by her then-boyfriend, who was 19 at the time.
This video tribute was posted a few days ago by Stop Child Executions.
UPDATE: Amnesty International has condemned the execution:
“Amnesty International is outraged at the execution of Delara Darabi, and particularly at the news that her lawyer was not informed about the execution, despite the legal requirement that he should receive 48 hours’ notice,” said Hassiba Hadj Sahraoui, Deputy Director of the Middle East and North Africa Programme. “This appears to have been a cynical move on the part of the authorities to avoid domestic and international protests which might have saved Delara Darabi’s life.”

This story is a shame but unfortunately nothing new for Iran or the greater Middle East. I just wrote an article about this recently:
Death sentences for juveniles, real estate brokers and pigs: just another week in the Middle East
