"A time is coming when men will go mad, and when they see someone who is not mad, they will attack him saying, 'You are mad, you are not like us'." --- St Antony of Egypt

Another shining moment in Canadian justice

by Scott Gilbreath ~ May 26th, 2009

A man charged with criminal negligence causing death following a street-racing incident was supposed to be under house arrest at the time.

One of the men charged after a woman died in a racing incident in eastern Newfoundland earlier this month had been instructed to stay at home under house arrest, CBC News has learned.

Ryan Watkins, 20, remains in police custody after being charged on May 11 with criminal negligence causing death, dangerous driving and failure to remain at the scene.
[…]
RCMP say Henerietta Head, 71, died after two racing cars forced her car off the Reach Run Causeway outside Boyd’s Cove, and into the ocean. Head was found in a partially submerged car.

Mr Watkins had been arrested in Toronto for attempted robbery but, following a guilty plea, was permitted to travel with his mother to Newfoundland where he was supposed to remain under house arrest.

Wasn’t his lawyer or his mother or anybody ordered to ensure that he remained at home? Is no one accountable for allowing this miscreant to roam free and kill an innocent woman? His lawyer maintains he had “no reason” to doubt his client’s desire to be an upright citizen, but I can’t help thinking he’s just trying to deny responsibility.
