Wisdom From the Desert

"A time is coming when men will go mad, and when they see someone who is not mad, they will attack him saying, 'You are mad, you are not like us'." --- St Antony of Egypt

Blogging hiatus

Friday, June 19th, 2009

As regular readers will have noticed, blogging activity here has been sporadic to non-existent for several weeks. I find that I have become immersed in other priorities and plans, so I need to announce that this blog will be on hiatus for the time being. I hope and expect that blogging will resume [...]

Apologies to my correspondents

Sunday, May 24th, 2009

My gmail account was hacked yesterday at 12:22 PM (Atlantic time), and a spam e-mail was sent from my address to every e-mail address ever entered at the account. The e-mail advertised the services of a Chinese company that I’ve never heard of.
I apologise to everyone who received that e-mail.
According to gmail’s activity [...]

I’m swamped

Wednesday, May 6th, 2009

There have been no blog posts for a few days because I’ve been catching up on paper work that has been ignored for too long. Files and documents have accumulated unattended around my home office and on my computer drive since we moved into our new house last September. Now I need to [...]

The Sheepcat testifies

Tuesday, March 17th, 2009

My friend Alan. who blogs as The Sheepcat, is posting his spiritual journey from “out and proud” homosexual and gay-rights activist to Roman Catholic convert. He is now engaged to a smart, lovely, and devout woman named Theresa. May God bless them and their marriage.
Part 1 of his story is posted here, and [...]

Working on another project

Tuesday, March 10th, 2009

There have been no new posts here yesterday and today because I have been at work on another web project. I hope to resume blogging in a day or two.

I’m number 52,240

Thursday, February 5th, 2009

According to Dynastree, mine is the 52,240th most common surname in Canada. When I entered my last name in the surname search box, this map was displayed.
No one with my last name shows up in Nova Scotia or, indeed, anywhere east of Ontario. I have given the authorities the slip.

Speed addicts in Nova Scotia

Monday, January 19th, 2009

This story in today’s Halifax Chronicle-Herald refers to a newly twinned section of Highway 101 that opened last month near my house. When first unveiled, it was hailed as a “potential death trap”. Despite that, it’s become a speedway.
Speed addicts get their kicks on route 101
Highway 101 seems to be turning into an autobahn.

Richard John Neuhaus, 1936-2009

Friday, January 9th, 2009

Father Richard John Neuhaus, one of the most influential Christian thinkers of our time, passed away yesterday morning at age 72.
I received the benefit of that influence when I was a relatively new Christian in the early 1980s. I first encountered him in the pages of National Review, where he wrote a regular column [...]

Are beards a symbol of ugliness?

Sunday, January 4th, 2009

I came across this disconcerting passage in How To Read A Church by Richard Taylor.
Images of Jesus with a beard may also have developed through a wish to symbolize ugliness. There was some debate in the early Church as to whether Jesus was in appearance the most handsome, or the most repulsive of men. [...]

My jobs

Friday, December 26th, 2008

I’ve been tagged by Alice the Camel and Jay Currie for the jobs meme.
“It’s simple. Just list all the jobs you’ve had in your life, in order. Don’t bust your brain: no durations or details are necessary, and feel free to omit anything that you feel might tend to incriminate you. I’m just curious. And [...]

What kind of blog is this?

Friday, November 21st, 2008

I have no idea how accurate this is or what algorithm is used. I just entered my blog’s URL at the Typealyser, and here’s what came up.
INTP – The Thinkers
The logical and analytical type. They are especialy [sic] attuned to difficult creative and intellectual challenges and always look for something more complex to dig [...]

A tree falls in Falmouth

Monday, November 17th, 2008

The Maritimes were hit hard by a wind storm yesterday afternoon and evening. Wind howled and lashed rain against our house for hours into the night. Late in the evening, we noticed a tree that formerly stood next to our property line had blown right over.
Here is the scene this morning.
This photo of [...]

Panoramic view of Windsor and Falmouth, Nova Scotia

Sunday, October 5th, 2008

This photo taken a few weeks ago shows a panoramic view of the town of Windsor, gateway to Nova Scotia’s Annapolis Valley, with the adjacent village of Falmouth in the background. I took the picture looking west from a hill on the east side of Windsor.

Clicking on the image will bring up a much-enlarged [...]

A move across the country and a new blog

Tuesday, September 30th, 2008

As readers of my former blog Magic Statistics will know, I recently retired and moved from Canada’s frozen North-West to its hurricane-prone South-East. In 1988, my wife and I moved from Vancouver, BC, to Whitehorse, Yukon, where I worked as a statistician for 20 years. Last month, we sold our house and moved [...]
