An epidemiological study published in the April 2009 issue of the European Journal of Public Health concludes that 1957 honour killings of women occurred in Pakistan between January 2004 and December 2007—about 20 percent of all homicides.

As part of a negotiated settlement with Taliban forces in Swat Valley, Pakistan has established Sharia courts in the region. However, the system is apparently not working to the satisfaction of Swat Taliban.

Pakistani reporter Musa Khan Khel has been shot dead in Swat Valley only two days after the government acceded to Taliban demands to enforce Sharia law in the area. He was abducted by unknown assailants while covering a “peace” rally by Taliban supporters.
